 Industry Safety & Economic Concerns:

Explosion

  • The most prevalent threat comes from the mass accumulation of dust particles in the active prospecting environment, which is the byproduct of the mining operation in the extraction process, that can and will be ignited by a spark to cause a catastrophic explosion. The spark may initiate from an electrical source or even more endemic, a natural occurrence when the dust particle count reaches a point where static electricity may happen automatically.
  • The Solution
  • In every environment where digging and drilling is taking place, a misting/fogging system should be employed delivering the appropriate FireStopper® product to coat the dust particles; in most cases this process will cause the micro particles to fall to the ground while still coated for protection against any reemergence of the hazard. Fire

The Mining environment, by definition, can self-produce extremely volatile byproducts that can lead to serious fire events. The following are just a few examples; nonetheless the solution is still the same:

  • Volatile gasses such as Methane, Hydrogen and Hydrogen sulfide or other volatile combinations thereof, however, the most volatile environment is referred to as damps. These damps are produced or released during mining operations including drilling and blasting, by mining machinery such as diesel and gasoline motors, and by other means such as the decay of timbers, the aftereffects of mine fires, and chemical processes like oxidation.  Ventilation alone is not enough to eliminate the potential for deadly explosions.
  • Malfunction of equipment or materials employed in the process of mining leading to fire.
  • Lithium-ion batteries pose a present and future danger in this scenario. Most vehicles operating in the mining concerns come with the potential for an unstoppable fire event whose temperature can exceed 2000 °F leading again to a catastrophic event.  Today, outside of FireStopper®, there exist no protection against a Lithium-ion battery fire no matter what or who represents efficacy; one must investigate the available evidence of massive failure to extinguish electric vehicles with the existing available class D certified products.
  • Criminal and intentional setting of fires, which in the abundance of caution must also be address.

The history of this Industry has produced devastating fire events some of which are still burning for over 75-years; these are generally coal mine fires.  Other mining operations are certainly not immune to long lasting fire events that not only devastate the mining enterprise but also the environment, the adjacent human habitats and most unprotected, the animal related habitation.

Executive Summary

Since Hydraulic Fracturing operations can virtually take place globally, until now, the support industry for these operations could not offer an economic solution, both in time, effort, and cost, to deliver total safety.

It is obvious that the Federal Government, the State of Pennsylvania and the appropriate Municipality have exhausted both available products and methodology in the trek to extinguishment. The devastation left behind, has caused the citizens and adjacent Municipalities great cost and concern by the unstoppable path this devastating event has taken and continues to progress.

Therefore we propose the following:

The ideal and recommended product in the FireStopper® arsenal is AB 40002 FFC. When recently demonstrated in an emergent coal fire in Portugal, this FireStopper® product extinguished a substantial coal fire load with a 9-liter extinguisher charged at the certified 6% usage.

We recommend a similar demonstration to be performed highlighting the undefeatable performance of this product.

Should the responsible personnel for decision making thereof decide to proceed with the program to extinguish this devastating event once and for all we respectfully propose the following:

THE DEMONSTRATION & NOVEL SOLUTION:

To demonstrate efficacy, we propose that FireStopper® demonstrate the efficacy of its appropriate product in extinguishing the native coal material in a similar condition as it exist underground; taking a controlled quantity and temperature level depicting close as possible said conditions, e.g.:

First Step

  • A moderate quantity of the coal material (50-lbs to 500-lbs) ignited to the highest potential temperature
  • Depending on the actual size of the demo fire, FireStopper® shall demonstrate the most economical extinguishment in time, product and effort

Second Step

In order to determine the way forward, we recommend the following second approach:

  • A sector of active underground fire should be chosen
  • Thermal mapping must be taken to determine the temperature, depth and course of said sector fire
  • Once analyzed, a starting point shall be chosen and product quantity and equipment shall be determined
  • The recommended equipment
  • Fracking Pump Trucks & personnel (numbers shall be determined by the initial area to be extinguished)Ground drilling equipment & PersonnelProduct transmission hoses and nozzles as neededFire fighting personnelWater supplyOther necessary diagnostic equipment (TBD)

This second step is necessary to determine adequate levels of FireStopper® AB 40002 FFC to maintain and manufacture for said massive project. Also, this step will help to calculate a general budget to terminus.

Conclusion

In the interest and service of the public, the Municipal Fire Services must engage in providing the best and most effective fire and fire related protection possible. Within the scope of said mandate, fire services should also provide for the safety of its personnel in the act of the intended task and within this pursuit. It is incumbent upon said service to investigate and identify the most reliable new technologies and products that will enable them to deliver the best and most reliable results available.

In the current profound social and economic conditions, Government, Industry and the Consumer cannot afford the risk of loss both materially and the ever present risk to life.
